Burma Star - WWII Memorial This monument was placed by the Burma Star Association in honor of Commonwealth Soldiers who served in WWII. The Memorial was placed by the First Alberta Branch of the Burma Star Association with the assistance of the Canadian Legion and the City of Calgary. It was dedicated on V.J. Day August 15, 1996.
The Burma Campaign saw forces of the Commonwealth, Chinese, and United States fighting against Japan, Thailand, and the Indian National Army. An interesting side-note of this Campaign was even though the United States, China and Commonwealth were on the same side, they worked mainly independent of each other. Allowing the war in this part of the world to remain a stalemate throughout the duration of the war. Long lasting effects of war in this area lead to the independence of both India and Burma.
The medal was awarded for those who served in Hong Kong, China, Malaya, and Sumatra. |
