I met Alex Clarke one cold day last November while walking past the Mustard Seed homeless shelter in Calgary’s Beltline. I was looking to photograph street people to help illustrate the Calgary Herald’s annual Christmas Fund campaign. It can be a tough assignment to photograph people at their most vulnerable. When possible, I approach people first, explain what I am doing and why, and see if they are willing to be photographed. Clarke was different. He came up to me and asked me what I was doing and why.
